Roots & Wings: Reading with Children #1

Welcome to Roots & Wings, a new, monthly post for Reading with Children.

Check out the Children’s Room at the Lopez Library. In addition to our diverse collection of books, audiobooks, magazines, and DVDs, we have games and jigsaw puzzles as well as a new art materials shelf. Come and create, read, and play.

Those who care for and work with young children know that little ones have favorite books they love reading over and over again. Once they fixate on one, it’s difficult to convince them to choose something else. The first book one of my son’s chose was a Reader’s Digest magazine! He was just over a year old, and we were living as a multigenerational family with parents who had a subscription. He wanted the issue of Reader’s Digest (titles of articles with ads and all) read to him over and over it seemed for a year! Despite all the wonderful children’s books at home, he chose this magazine.

Two library books have risen to the top of the “AGAIN!” theme at Story Time.

The first is Clip Clop by Nicola Smee, about a horse who gives his barnyard friends a ride around the farm. They have a big surprise as Mr. Horse goes faster and faster, and all enjoy the fun of flying through the air and landing in a haystack. And of course, they want to do it again!

The second book is Emily Gravett’s Again! It’s a story of a very tired dragon mother who is trying to read to her dragon child who does not like to sleep. She edits the book each time she reads until she herself falls asleep. I won’t spoil the BIG surprise at the end of the book. Super fun!

Happy reading! AGAIN and AGAIN!
