Author Reading – The Altitude Journals: A seven-year journey from the lowest point in my life to the highest point on Earth

On Thursday, October 4th at 7pm author and part-time Lopez resident David Mauro will be the next speaker in our Know Your Neighbor series. David will do a reading from his book, “The Altitude Journals: a seven year journey from the lowest point in my life to the highest point on Earth.”

When Mauro was in his forties, his life hit rock bottom. With nothing to lose, he left everything he knew behind and set out on an epic international adventure. For the next seven years, Dave trudged across glaciers, frozen wastelands and through dense, dangerous forests. He communed with penguins and elephants, kept company with cannibals and gunrunners, and spoke with the dead. And though he’d never been a climber, he ended up joining history’s courageous few when he ascended into the clouds to stand at the summit of Mt Everest.

David will also be facilitating a writing workshop on Saturday, Oct. 6th from 11am – 1pm in the Library Community Room. His workshop is titled, “Hearing Your Creative Voice: Accessing Writing Through Improvisation.”  You can learn more about that program here.

In addition to working as a Certified Financial Planner®, David Mauro writes for Adventures Northwest magazine and blogs extensively on topics ranging from mountain climbing to why sardines are safe. In the course of his acting career David has appeared in several commercials for television, the internet, print and radio. In one recent TV commercial he represented a large chain of carpet stores and as a result is now better known for hawking carpet than for summiting Mt Everest. Sigh.

David is an improv alumni of The Upfront Theatre, frequent consumer of emergency room services, and builder of dubious water craft. More than anything he would like us all to do more listening; listening to each other and listening to that quiet voice that tries to guide our lives. The father of two sons (Trevor, living in Seattle, and Chase, living in Beijing), David resides part time on Lopez and in Bellingham, Washington with Rocky “The Wonder Dog” and Lin Lehn …to whom he is permanently engaged.
