April Reader Spotlight: Stephen Carter

Welcome to the monthly installment of Reader Spotlight – this month we’ve asked local artist and musician Stephen Carter for his reading recommendations.

Stephen Carter Reader Spotlight

Stehen Carter has lived on Lopez for more than 12 years, and has visited Lopez since he was a teenager. Stephen and his wife Chris were puppeteers for 40 years in Seattle, and puppetry actually animates a lot of his interest in books. He is now retired, and continues to work as an artist and a musician. His love of reading originally comes from his father, who was “a very bookish man.” Stephen’s father acquainted him with a lot of the classics, which Stephen enjoys reading not only because the stories are wonderful, but also because he enjoys the descriptions of the old methods for doing things. For example, Stephen likes the description of how the Cyclops makes cheese in Homer’s The Odyssey. Turns out, it’s the same method Romanian shepherds use.
