January 5th: Read one or more of Louise Erdrich’s “Birchbark House” series, which is an alternative to the “Little House on the Prairie” series, told through an indigenous perspective. The series begins with The Birchbark House, followed by The Game of Silence, The Porcupine Year, Chickadee, and Makoons.
February 2nd: Read one or more books by Francisco X. Stork, whose novels follow Hispanic teens as they come of age. Here are just a few examples: Irises, The Memory of Light, Behind the Eyes, Marcelo in the Real World, The Last Summer of the Death Warriors, Disappeared, and its sequel, Illegal.
