On Sunday, October 31st from 11am – 2pm, join local farmer and fungus enthusiast James Nowak–AKA “Animal”–for an afternoon of learning about and hunting mushrooms. This program will include a brief indoor presentation and discussion about the fungal life cycle, nomenclature, and an overview of various types of mushrooms. Afterwards the group will venture into the forest to search for local mushrooms and talk about the different species you’ll encounter.
This program will start at the Lopez Library for the indoor presentation, and then move to Lopez Hill for foraging.

For James Nowak, foraging for mushrooms was a family tradition passed down from grandfather to father to son beginning when he was only six years old. He continues his fungal quest and loves to share his knowledge of mushrooms with others. Having served on the board of the Puget Sound Mycological Society he is well-versed in the inner workings of a mushroom club, and currently organizes their annual mushroom gathering. He learned the art of cultivation and currently guides wild mushroom forays and truffle hunting trips with his trained truffle dog Dino.
