At the end of September the Lopez Island Library will once again participate in National Banned Books Week (Sept. 25-Oct 2). The library encourages you to visit our current exhibit & check out one of the banned books from our Banned Books exhibit. Celebrate your right to read! We are also hosting a Banned Books made into movies film festival. The first film to be screened will be the Iranian film “Persepolis”. The book was banned in Iran and in the US as recently as 2013 for political & sexual content. The film won the Jury Prize at Cannes & was also nominated for an Academy Award. “Persepolis” will be screened in the library’s community room Friday, Sept. 16th at 7:00 PM. The event is co-hosted by the library & the Lopez Island Lutheran Church. Snacks will be provided. The final 4 films in the festival will be old fashioned matinees with screenings from 2-4 PM on the big screen in the community room. Join us for the following films all made from banned books: Wed. Sept 28: “Sophie’s Choice”; Thurs. Sept 29: “Catch 22”, Friday Sept. 30th: “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”; Sat. Oct. 1: ” Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”. Popcorn will be served!
