Call to join the Lopez Island Library Board of Trustees

Lopez Island Library logoThe Lopez Island Library Board of Trustees seeks a new member to join our 5-member board. We are a friendly and collegial group with a passion for supporting our library and serving our community. In conjunction with the director and staff, trustees set the direction of the library by adopting policies and long-range plans, assuring compliance with laws, and overseeing the library’s expenditure of funds. Selection as a library trustee is both an honor and a major fiduciary responsibility, as the Board has signatory authority for actions and contracts that the library undertakes.

Board members also represent the interests of the community and are appointed to serve as stewards of its money, knowledge, and culture. Many skill sets are needed. Recently Strategic Priorities were developed with significant input from the community. The primary goal is to become a model rural library that helps the community take advantage of opportunities and continue lifelong learning. Implementation of the plan, including developing partnerships with other Lopez organizations, is ongoing. The Lopez Library has also recently completed a Facilities Condition Assessment that will allow us to realistically plan for infrastructure maintenance and improvement.

The Lopez Island Library Board is a working board. In addition to the monthly meeting, trustees sit on Sub-Committees and contribute time to special projects. Special meetings may be called to address topics needing resolution. In general Board responsibilities require about 10 hours a month. Meetings are in person with a zoom option.

The application process: please send a Letter of interest by August 12 detailing your reasons for wanting to join the Board, how your background and experience will contribute to the Board objectives, and your areas of interest. The Letter of Interest and any questions should be addressed to trustees@lopezlibrary.org. The Library Board is an organization that expects and encourages questions; after all, we are in the Information Business.

The Library Board will begin interviews with applicants the week of August 26-30.
