Jacob Johns

Jacob Johns is a Hopi and Akimel O’odham artist and environmental defender who is leading the Indigenous Wisdom Keepers delegation at COP28. Jacob was born at the Phoenix Indian Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. His mother was a portrait artist who taught him to draw. Johns expresses activism through his artwork, which has been displayed in JFK Library’s Secrist Gallery among other galleries. His black-and-white portraits of Native people and civil rights leaders include contrasting splashes of color that can evoke an emotional reaction in a way that a dry policy document can’t. Along with policy and art, peaceful protest is another integral part of his life. In 2023, after traveling with a small group to pray at sacred sites around the world, Jacob and his companions formed A Wisdom Keepers Delegation, an Indigenous led organization bringing traditional knowledge into global climate policy.

The Series of Programming is split into Arts programs/events sponsored by Lopez Library, and Environmental Defense programs/events sponsored by the LCLT.

Library Arts Programs include: exhibition of paintings and art objects, a screening of films by the artist, the launch of his illustrated book The Good Path and a collaborative community mural project.
