“Children need two things: roots and wings.”
Back to School Already! Seems like summer is still in full swing and the start of the school year is lapping like the water on the sand. Check out our in library display of back to school books; you may find something that could fit your family wherever school takes place for you. Using the theme of Roots and Wings for new school goers, here are a few tips from a few seasoned parents.
Roots:
Establish supportive healthy habits for young children in the fall semester: Good Food, Good Rest, Good Books (a consistent daily reading time)
Allow time for uninterrupted play after school. Give your children space to debrief and process through the stimulation of the day without input from TV or other stimuli. Be aware of nuances of language, emotions and behavior to gather information and take some time to log these over time before jumping to conclusions. The emotional needs of your children will emerge naturally if you allow this space. Remember that for young children, going to school is intense emotional work. It takes practice and time to gain school skills.
Wings:
Keep finishing summer family fun at the beach, at the ice cream store, with friends and family on picnics, etc. Let summer go gently and spend as much time outdoors as possible. Notice the changes outside that bring in the cool weather. Children are very connected to the earth and what they need to regulate may be right out your door!
