Peter Cavanagh & Ann Vandervelde – Friday, May 9th at the Lopez Center

We are elated to have Ann Vandervelde and Peter Cavanagh co-presenting a gorgeous evening at the Lopez Center for Community & the Arts on Friday, May 9.  Peter is launching his new book, How Birds Fly, and both Ann and Peter will have art exhibitions.

Ann Vandervelde and Peter Cavanagh have been fixtures on the Lopez art scene for 15 years of their 44-year marriage, opening their respective studios for the annual Labor Day studio tours. In back-to-back presentations on May 9th at the Lopez Center for Community and the Arts, they will trace the origins of their artistic endeavors and showcase their latest work with an exhibition that will run through May 27.

Ann was a commercial graphic illustrator for several years after graduating in Fine Art from the University of Wisconsin. Her artistic output during that period included delicate botanicals in pencil and watercolor. She also drew a series of cartoons for one of Peter’s early books. This was followed by a journey towards abstraction, and it is that evolution which will be the focus of her presentation.

After a career in academia as a biomechanics professor, Peter became consumed by photographing and understanding the flight of birds. His journey has taken him and his camera to all seven continents and has resulted in two books. He will present images, stories, diagrams, give a reading from, and sign copies of his latest book HOW BIRDS FLY: The Science and Art of Avian Flight. He promises to explain several mysteries of bird flight!

This event is co-presented by the LCCA, the Lopez Library, the Lopez Artists Guild, and the Lopez Bookshop.
