Get a Library Card

Don’t have a library card?

SIGN UP through our catalog. Once you submit the online application, come to the library to show your proof of residency and pick up your card. If you have questions, or if you have an expired library card, call us at 360-468-2265 or email librarian@lopezlibrary.org for assistance.

Who Qualifies for a Free Library Card?

You can get a free library card if you are a resident, rent or own property on Lopez Island, or if you attend school on Lopez Island. Applicants under 17 must have applications co-signed by a parent or guardian, who is willing to take financial responsibility.

Proof of residency is required. If you are not listed as owner of a property in the San Juan County Assessor’s database, then a utility bill in your name, a driver’s license, or record of local employment can be used to confirm you are a Lopez Island resident.

Non-Resident Cards

If you don’t qualify for the free card, you can purchase a non-resident card. Non-resident cards are for people who visit the island frequently throughout the year or who live on a neighboring island without a library. Non-resident cards cost $50 and are good for one year (from the date of purchase). Non-resident cards also have the following borrowing privileges: 7 reserves and 15 items total at one time, including books, DVDs, audiobooks, magazines, puzzles and games. Non-resident cardholders also have access to all of our e-resources for one year. Equipment, circtech, and musical instruments may not be borrowed on a non-resident card. Contact us if you wish to purchase or renew a non-resident card.

Replacement and Renewal of Library Cards

If your card is lost, do not worry, we can find you in our library system. We can give you a cardboard card with your ID number.   We don’t require you to produce your physical card to check out, so we suggest waiting to replace it. It might turn up.

Cards expire every five years, allowing us to confirm or update your contact info. Just call us at 360-468-2265, we can renew your card over the phone in a few minutes, often even if your card has been expired several years.

Borrowing Limits

Books, Periodicals, Music

Books, audio books, musical instruments and music CDs are due in 30 days. Magazines are due in 14 days. You may have up to 60 items total out at once. You can usually renew items, unless another patron has placed a hold on your item (musical instruments are typically only renewed once). Once items are 60 days overdue (20 days for musical instruments) your account will be blocked and you will be unable to borrow until you renew, return, or pay replacement cost for the items.

DVDs

All DVDs, whether fiction or non-fiction, are due in seven days, with a maximum of ten (10) DVDs checked out to any one individual at a time. You may also renew these items up to three (3) times, as long as no one is waiting.
