The Lopez Library is pleased to feature the calligraphy of Joyce Lyster. Her show, titled “Bringing Letters to Life” will run from April 6th to May 18, 2018. Please stop by the library to see the show. In the artist’s own words:
“I love the art of beautiful letters or calligraphy as it is called. I have studied them, practiced them, played with them, and used them for over 35 years. It is a very versatile art form in that it can be applied both traditionally and contemporarily and they can be applied to many different media – including paper, fabric, rocks or shells. I enjoy experimenting with different tools from traditional nibs and brushes to those constructed from recycled pop cans and sticks of wood. Friends enjoy receiving envelopes decorated with their names. Fabric wall hangings and pillows show off my letters as well as framed pieces on walls. I’ve done rocks with names for place settings for weddings as well as addresses on invitations. Quotes often speak to me and they challenge me to find a way to express them creatively and artistically. Organizing workshops for the Edmonds calligraphy guild, I was able to meet and study with many of the best calligraphers of our day. Besides calligraphy, I enjoy making books, the paper arts, drawing, painting, photography, and playing the flute. I find it difficult to stick with just one art form and find joy in being creative in all walks of life. My goal is to bring a little beauty to each day. Though there are many fonts available to us on our computers, they never can match the handwritten letters in bringing words to life. The quote, “Letters are symbols which turn matter into spirit,” speaks to this. I hope you enjoy this sampling of my work and are inspired to make beautiful letters in your own daily life.” – Joyce Lyster
