In the artist’s own words: “From an early age I have always loved drawing and painting. I received a BA in Fine Arts from UCLA focusing on painting, printmaking and photography. Graduate work found me seeking a program involved with art therapy but morphed into a Masters of Science in Education with a specialization in Learning Disabilities. My thesis was to design and implement an art program to remediate visual perceptual disabilities and was followed by numerous years teaching elementary school.
10 years ago, on retiring from teaching and moving full time to Lopez Island, I came to the decision to finally immerse myself back into the art realm. Since then, I have been focusing on painting using the mediums of watercolor and pastel. Also, I have renewed my efforts with my first love, woodcuts, and most recently I have been delving again into photograph. I enjoy the challenge of different ways of depicting light as it plays within a painting or image. I am greatly influenced by my love of the outdoors, wildflowers, gardening and travels.
Many of the pieces in this show were inspired by my life on Lopez and the iconic scenery that surrounds us daily as well as the garden spaces at my home. In addition I have found inspiration from travels with other artists to Egypt, Croatia and France. A highlight on one of these trips was having exclusive time to paint plein air in Monet’s gardens at Giverny, France.
I am a member of the Northwest Watercolor Society and the Lopez Artist Guild. I have a small studio gallery at Studio 25 on Eads Road in Lopez Village. ” – Anne Whirledge-Karp
