“Take it or Leave it” Photography by Michael Sobel. Opening exhibit and artist talk, March 7, 5:00pm

We are pleased to present Take it or Leave it, a compelling new photography exhibit by Michael Sobel exploring one of the island’s most beloved and uniquely local spaces: TIOLI!

Through striking black-and-white portraits and vivid color studies of objects, Sobel documents a place where reuse becomes ritual, generosity becomes community practice, and everyday belongings tell unexpected stories. Created over more than five years, the project captures the spirit of Lopez Island’s shared commitment to sustainability, cooperation, and care for the world we inhabit together.

Using a traditional 4×5 view camera alongside contemporary digital photography, Sobel moves beyond simple documentation to reveal the human relationships and meanings embedded in the objects we give away, reclaim, and pass along. Take it or Leave it invites viewers to reflect on consumption, connection, and the idea that on an island — and on our planet — nothing is ever truly thrown away.
