Year of Vision Programs

The Lopez Library is pleased to be collaborating with the Lopez Solid Waste Alternative Program (SWAP) in conjunction with SWAP’s annual theme for 2020, “The Year of Vision.” The library will be producing a monthly series of hands-on programs that focus on fun and family-friendly upcycling, re-use, and re-purposing activities, facilitated by Nikyta Palmisani (SWAP) and Malia Sanford (Lopez Library).

Textile up-cycling workshop (make your own undies)!
Saturday, November 23rd,
2pm – 4pm
Refashion old textiles for new uses and styles with the help of local sewing experts. Bring in old t-shirts or skirts that are ready to have a new, stylish life; and also learn how to make your own underwear (for men and women) out of reused textile materials. It’s clean, it’s cheap, it’s fun, and it may save you a trip off-island! Part of the Year of Reuse partnership between the Lopez Library and the Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District.

Dia De Los Muertos Family Program
Saturday, November 2nd at 2pm
Film Screening: “Coco” at 4pm

Come celebrate the Day of the Dead with the Lopez Community. Nikyta Palmisani will help facilitate a paper flower making workshop using old pages from discarded books. Those flowers can then be added to a public Ofrenda (or ancestor altar) where Lopezians are encouraged to bring photos of their ancestors, framed or unframed, that can be left on this public space for a week or longer. Photocopies of precious photos are encouraged. Day of the Dead is a rare holiday for celebrating death and life. It is unlike any holiday, where mourning is exchanged for celebration. To learn more about the Dia De Los Muertos holiday, visit this informative website.
Then stay for a showing of the Disney animated film “Coco” (rated PG), which explores the Day of Dead and it’s importance in a wonderful animated story with fabulous music.

Up-Cycled planters and flower pots
Saturday, May 25th 2pm at the Library

Ever thought about turning an old pair of boots or empty bottles into flower pots? Well, now you can! The Lopez Library will be co-hosting a program on Saturday, May 25th from 2pm to 4pm in the Library’s Community Room, helping people up-cycle old materials, and turn them into flower pots, containers and planters. Be inspired to transform familiar items that would otherwise end up in the landfill or recycling bin into beautiful and fun containers for plants and gardens. Thanks to the annual collaboration between the Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District and Oregon’s Realms School, there are 4 bins of adorable shoes ready to be transformed into garden and porch ready planters for your home! The Library program will also include a demonstration of how to transform wine bottles into succulent containers and/or drinking tumblers with one special cut. A few free demonstration glasses will be available to program participants. If you have great garden container up-cycle materials, ideas, or examples, bring your photos or containers to share with the group. The Library will provide some potting soil, and a few succulent plants for taking home. Please bring any plants to use in your own creation, or to share with others. This event is free and open to all ages, and will leave many free items for participants to take home with them.  The program is part of the Year of Reuse collaboration between the Lopez Library and the Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District.

Repair Cafe
Saturday, April 27th 2pm

There will be a Repair Café on Saturday, April 27th from 1:30pm to 4:30pm in the Library Community Room. Bring in items that need simple repairs in three main categories: appliances, furniture, and textiles/clothes. This event is to help get all those old, beloved items out of the corners of your houses and closets and back into use! If your item needs a replacement part, please get that part and bring it with you on Saturday, April 27th. There is a burgeoning repair movement spreading across the world, in reaction to the wasteful consumer-based culture, with the ultimate aim being to empower people to realize that it doesn’t take much to bring seemingly defunct things back to life. The value is immediate, from saving people money to reducing the amount we throw away in the trash.

Additional “Year of Reuse” programs include Up-Cycled Flower Pots on May 25th; 3D-Printing class on June 22nd; an outdoor “Book Nook” Cardboard Challenge on July 5th, using recycled cardboard and the leftover books from the 4th of July annual book sale; and more programming throughout the summer and fall months. Mark your calendars and join us in celebration of The Year of Reuse!

If you are interested in volunteering as a fixer for the Repair Cafe event, or future Repair Cafes, contact Nikyta Palmisani at nikytap@lopezsolidwaste.org or Malia Sanford at malia@lopezlibrary.org.
