The purpose of the Friends of the Lopez Island Library is to provide support to the Library’s facility and staff, as well as to promote library awareness.
The Friends host a very popular/highly attended used book sale each year on July 4th. This year they will be selling at the Pre-school Bazaar on the Saturday during the Thanksgiving Weekend. Used books are also sold at the ferry landing and in the library all year long. Proceeds from these book sales fund computers, furniture, and other library needs. Library events, lectures, science and children’s programs as well as author events also benefit from your donations to the Friends of the Lopez Island Library. Friends support the annual, and very popular, Teddy Bear Picnic which has been held for over thirty five years. The Friends have souvenir and fun/functional gift items available for purchase in the library including aprons, note cards, and book totes.
Become a Friend
What does becoming a Friend mean? Simply stated, it means that you will receive about one or two mailings a year, mostly to let you know about the book sales and also to let you know what the friends are doing to support library efforts. What to learn more? Visit the national United for Libraries site.
Beyond that, it is strictly up to the individual patron. Some feel very strongly about supporting our unique library by sending in a small donation and others find that volunteering their time is a good way to keep their fingers on the pulse of the community.
Coming into the library and using our many services is yet another way to show support.

The book sales simply can’t happen without a robust volunteer effort. If you have free time in your life, and especially if you’re new to Lopez, please consider finding a niche for yourself with the Friends. Still wondering about the Friends? Attend a board meeting at 10am on the 3rd Thursday of every month in the Library Community Room. All levels of participation are appreciated. Email: email@example.com
