Lopez Island Library presents the work of artist Ilene Bernstein

The Lopez Island Library is grateful to feature the interesting work of artist Ilene Bernstein.  The artist shared this statement………………………

Washed Up: A series of assemblages made from wooden debris worn by water and time and washed up on Lopez beaches.  Components have been minimally altered and constructions are assembled like puzzles.

“Having spent nearly 40 years in academia, teaching and doing research in Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Washington, my foray into seriously creating art is relatively recent.  During many of those years my leisure time was spent on Lopez Island walking on beaches and admiring and collecting debris so interesting, mysterious and beautiful that I felt it was worthy of display in a trendy art gallery.   For me, retirement provided the opportunity to take these objects and use them as raw material for assemblages that gave them (and me) a new kind of life.” – Ilene Bernstein
